SEMESTER-LONG ENRICHMENTS 

Spanish Club (Fall) 

Reinforce Spanish skills by watching films in Spanish and discussing and analyzing them while using the Spanish language.  This will help prepare students for and encourage them to take the AP Spanish Language class. 

International Club (Spring) 

Students who want to participate in International Day should sign up for this club. 

Model UN (Fall) 

Learn how the United Nations works by forming delegations, creating bills, and representing Hillwood at the state Model UN Conference in the fall. There is a cost for the conference, but fundraising will occur throughout the year. 

Youth in Government (Spring) 

Learn how your state government works by forming delegations, creating bills, and representing Hillwood at the state Youth Legislature Conference. There is a cost for the conference, but fundraising will occur throughout the year. 

A/V Club 

In the A/V Club we will explore the art of audio and video production from its history to hands-on activities. 

Stage/Theatre Maintenance and Tech 

Learn to properly care for, maintain, adjust, and run theatre and stage equipment. 

Photography - Studio Lighting/Composition 

Learn basic studio lighting techniques and photography composition using hands-on activities in the Hillwood Photography Studio. Learn basic retouching and photo manipulation techniques using industry software like Photoshop and Illustrator. 

Nature Photography 

Hands on activities using digital cameras and Photoshop to create photos of the natural world. Some classes will be held in the Hillwood Photography Studio using professional lighting techniques. Skills USA activities, a student organization for Digital Arts & Design students, will also be included in this class on occasion. 

Observational Drawing 

Students will develop skills in drawing through observation and exercises from the book, "Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain."  

DIY Projects with Everyday Resources 

Create jewelry using household objects-trash to treasures 

Adventure Time 

Explore mainly the US, and outside destinations, using research, presentation skills, creating graphic displays, and learning the logistics of planning a big adventure. 

Healthy Lifestyles 

Students will be taught about healthy eating habits and how to deal with stress  

Fantasy Sports 

All students will participate in an online class "league.”  Daily strategies would be discussed to prepare the best team possible.  At the end of the season there will be reward incentives for the winners. During the Fall Semester will focus on football, and during the Spring Semester we will focus on hockey and baseball. 

Basketball 

Learn how to shoot a free throw and other basketball skills and strategies 

Football 7v7 

Passing, Catching, and Running after the Catch Concepts, Research and Study  

Garden Club 

Students will work in small groups to design a maintain a garden. 

Fishing 

Teaching students how to prepare rod, reels, hook and line for fishing. Practice casting and retrieving various lures.  

Weather Forecasting 

Students will become familiar with different weather models and how the models are developed. They will come up with their own forecasts. They will make observations of weather and keep data. They will test the precision of meteorological models versus the observed weather. This will inform forecasting decisions. They will inform other students of their prediction, especially during extreme weather events. 

Popular Culture: History of Mystery 

The course would trace mysteries from Poe to modern writers like Paretsky and Navarro. 

Math Investigations (MI) 

In Math Investigations (MI) we will be looking at math that you don’t get to study in high school, math that will make you see the world around you in a different way, particularly through patterns.  Some of our topics will be Fibonacci patterns, the Golden ratio, Pascal’s Triangle, and other types of special numbers by constructing patterns and looking for trends.  You will look at math through the lens of a mathematician and even try to construct your own unique patterns. 

Introduction to Latin 

Explore Latin word stems and usages to develop vocabulary. This Enrichment will be great for students who are interested in future careers in medicine or law! 

Anime Club 

As an extension of the current Hillwood Anime Club, students will learn about Japanese animation and other aspects of Pop culture in Japan. 

Movie Club/Film Study & Appreciation 

A semester-long study of appreciation and analysis of all aspects of film (i.e. history, cinematography, special effects, script-writing, etc.) across the entire history of film (from silent films to modern film and many periods in between).    

American Popular Music 

A survey of popular music styles, artists, and their lives and times. 

STEAM - Launch Your Creativity 

Explore and create projects based on YOUR ideas and goals using materials in the makerspace - such as legos, Knex, robotics, snap circuits, art materials, and other creativity generators. With STEAM - Science Technology Engineering Art Math - and you, the sky is the limit! 

Songwriting and Music Production 

The art and craft of songwriting goes beyond composing words and melodies . Learning the art of recording music and beats leads to the science of mixing and mastering the sound to make complete tracks. 

Prep Like a Champion 

Lock in the SITE of your Future (Serving, Integrity, Teamwork, & Excellence) 

Our goal: to empower, enhance, produce and develop leaders for the future. We will set up college prep counseling, motivational speakers, character building and leadership training, college tours, etc. 

Freshmen Only Courses: 

Weight Training 

Weight training based on circuit training and conditioning. Students must be highly motivated to participate. 

Trash to Treasure 

Students will transform an item that is cluttering our landfills and oceans into something amazing. 

Sportsmanship Club 

Learn sportsmanship, how to be coachable, and responsibilities in classroom as a leader 

YEAR-LONG ENRICHMENTS 

HOSA Competitive Events 

Focus on preparing HOSA state and regional competitors with skills that allow the students to be successful at competition.  Increase the  knowledge and ability  to perform skills required for many of the HOSA competition.  

Debate Team 

Join Hillwood's award-winning debate team!  Become a pro at debating; practice and prepare to compete (and win!) in district-wide debate tournaments.  Become a debater...your voice deserves to be heard! 

Quiz Bowl 

Quiz Bowl is a team that will compete to answer questions from all areas of knowledge, including history, literature, science, fine arts, current events, sports, and popular culture. We will practice answering trivia questions, and we will hopefully have the opportunity to compete in a Quiz Bowl competition against other schools in the area. 

Science Olympiad 

Science Olympiad competitions are like academic track meets, consisting of a series of 23 team events in each division (Division B is middle school; Division C is high school). Each year, a portion of the events are rotated to reflect the ever-changing nature of genetics, earth science, chemistry, anatomy, physics, geology, mechanical engineering and technology. By combining events from all disciplines, Science Olympiad encourages a wide cross-section of students to get involved. Emphasis is placed on active hands-on group participation. Through Science Olympiad, students, teachers, parents, principals and business leaders bond together and work toward a shared goal. 

Mock Trial Team 

Mock trial is a program that gives students the opportunity to be trial lawyers.  The students will be given a case and witnesses and be involved in direct and cross-examining witnesses as well as making objections and opening and closing statements.  We need students who are interested in being lawyers and those that are interested in drama to be witnesses. 

Competitive Gaming Club 

Students will form a competitive gaming team with an emphasis on the MOBA (Multiplayer Online Battle Arena) genre, i.e. League of Legends, Smite, DOTA 2. 

Future Educators of America 

A chapter of the national organization for students interested in pursuing a career in education. 

Future Farmers of America 

National organization focusing on agricultural leadership, planting, harvesting, seasonal plant sales, the study food production, etc. 

American Studies 

Students will improve their understanding of the connections between American history and culture, focusing primarily on the impact that film, the visual and performing arts, and literature have had on the development of American society. 

Outdoors/Adventure Club (Survival and Outdoors Skills) 

Students will learn and participate in outdoor activities throughout the year. Each quarter, the club will focus on different activities based on the season and year.  Activities will include orienteering, reading a map, water filtration, campsite setup/teardown, leave no trace, fort/shelter building, building a hammock, and watching both outdoors documentaries and movies. ***NOT for students who are afraid of bugs or nature. ***MUST be willing and prepared to go outside in all types of weather. 

Movie Making Club 

Introduce students to different genres of movies with a focus on creating their own short film by the end of the year. 

Theater/Improv 

Learn basic acting skills, practice improvisation through games and participate in scene studies. Potentially, we could prepare a show if there is enough interest. Open to all grade levels. 

Best Buddies 

Best Buddies High Schools fosters one-to-one friendships by bringing together general education students and life skills students. You'll have the opportunities to interact in and out of school with your best buddy! 

Pep Club/Student Government Association 

Pep Club is responsible for promoting school spirit and providing service to the school community. Activities are mainly designed to support athletic programs. These activities include pep rallies, Homecoming week, gym and stadium decoration and the Prom. Pep Club also sponsors activities for the School Government Association and Dress-Down Days. The Pep Club is open to all HHS students interested in helping to promote school spirit.

Freshman Class Council 

Freshman students gathering together to help brainstorm, design, plan, and set up events, decorations for the freshman academy hallways, and act as representatives for the Freshman Class of 2020. Will organize and hold class elections once we begin. **Expectations are high for these students**
